I guess I last did serious Hearthstoning for the nifty "Gnomes" card back last December, but Blizz might lure me back, as well as squeeze 10 bucks out of me, if they give me a Warlock hero Gnome option & a new themed Warlock/Gnome card back: "Heroes Emerge: New Hearthstone Heroes Are Coming!"

I've been perplexed that it has taken this long to give us an option other than Garrosh Hellscream. I understand that Blizz & Chris Metzen are all about the Orcs, but even they must have realized before now that enough is enough with the Orcage. Besides ... Garrosh Hellscream, really???

Same thing with Gul'dan, he's got to go.

Bring on the Gnomes! 8)

That's because they think that Gnomes are Orc farts. They fail to realize/deliberately ignore that Orcs, in fact, spawn in moldy corners in Gnome locker rooms at sports complexes.

I'm completely baffled by the business model surrounding this. $10USD seems awfully excessive for the most minor of minor cosmetic changes. I could see charging for something which had alternate mechanics but not so much for a new avatar and voice files. Come to think of it, how do Blizzard also get away with charging so much for hots skins?

Well, when a game is free for the player, you gotta cover the costs that are on your end for it somehow...

the price seems a bit steep to me

anway, the warlock one should be wilfred fizzlebang, including a changed voiceover for jarraxus so he says "Trifling gnome, your arrogance will be your undoing!" when you play him

I can see that. After all, they already have special interactions between some cards already - if your opponent has Nefarian out, and you play Deathwing, Nef will stammer out "D-d-daddy?!"

It does strike me as more than I would have expected, on the order of maybe twice as expensive as I would have thought.

It seems that Blizz did try to flesh out the package to try to justify the price, perhaps:
  • New detailed animated Hero portrait artwork
  • Unique Hero power animations
  • Unique emotes and voices
  • Custom visual theme for the play area
  • “Entering the game” animations
  • Unique card back

I would be tempted to pick up Gnome heroes, but I'm not feeling persuaded to pick up Magni Bronzebeard for 10 bucks, although that would allow me to replace an Orc with a character I'd actually care to play. If it was $10 to provide a roster of Alliance hero options then I'd kick all the Orcs to the curb and get that.

Next two are Alleria Windrunner and Medivh, so looks like those of us burned out on Orcs do get to kick a half-orc, half-ogre to the curb. ;)

Tavern Brawl mode, more alternate portraits coming to Hearthstone [Updated]

I like the sound of that Collection Manager that will provide "the ability to customize and attach card backs to certain decks".

I'm one of those holding out hope for Wilfred Fizzlebang as an option, I've talked myself into springing for him and terminating Gul'dan with extreme prejudice. 8)

Guldan was the only Orc I actually liked, mainly because of his history and what he created.

That said, brawling actually has me intrigued. Not sure if it's enough to bring me back to the game, but enough to be curious about.

Glad to see Anne Stickney in today's Blizzard Watch (the old WoW Insider) Queue column put in a vote for Wilfred Fizzlebang, too. 8)

@Marconin asked via Twitter:

We know who the hero skins are for Warrior/Mage/Hunter in Hearthstone. Who do you think the other classes will be?

For Warlock, let’s bring in Wilfred Fizzlebang. I know for Druid I’m hoping Hamuul Runetotem will make an appearance. For Paladin, I’m thinking either Lady Liadrin or Sunwalker Dezco, or maybe even Turalyon (it would be appropriate, as they’ve just added Alleria.) Rogue, I’d like to see either Mathias Shaw or Garona. Shaman, I think that having Nobundo in there would only be appropriate, and for Priest, I think Velen, Tyrande, or if they wanted to go with a Horde face, throw Sen’jin in there, because why not?

Yeah, Garona is FAR more iconic for Rogues than some oneshot comc character.

Along with the new hero options now patched in, the first "Tavern Brawl" officially kicks off tomorrow: http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/blog/19803850/hearthstone-patch-notes-2709166-tavern-brawl-new-heroes-and-customization-6-15-2015
In this Hearthstone patch, we’re introducing Tavern Brawl: a whole new way to play that changes every week!

Patch 2.7 also adds the ability to purchase new heroes for your Warrior, Hunter, and Mage decks. On top of that, you’ll now be able to customize each of your decks with its own card back.

PSA reminder for the free card pack:
Tavern Brawls will have free admission when the new mode becomes available. As part of the launch celebration, you'll earn a free card pack when you win your first game of the week in the first several brawls!

I was just interested in Gnome hero options, but now I'm considering Alleria Windrunner (http://blizzardwatch.com/2015/06/15/know-lore-alleria-windrunner/). I have not had any interest in Rexxar, my Hearthstone Hunter is only level 3. However, after two WoW expansions filled with Orcage, I'm feeling a bond with Alleria's hatred of Orcs. ;)

I always felt the Alliance should have High Elves as a playable race, maybe this will help pave the way for playable High Elves in WoW? (I know at one time in the early days the devs were not interested in confusing players in PvP with similar silhouettes or character models, but with Pandaren now on both sides I figure that's no longer an issue for the devs.)

Sorry, but lore doesn't allow for playable High Elves.

Gnomes lost 80% of their populace in the Fall, yet their numbers are incredible compared to the current number of High Elves in lore.

Nearly 90% of High Elves were slain during Artha's march through Quel'thalas. And almost that many of those who survived fel into the addiction to fel magic following the desruction of the sunwell, thus becoming Blood Elves.

The approximate 1% remaining of living and uncorrupted High Elves are mostly scattered and isolated around Azeroth, with the largest singular grouping of them being the Silver Covenant in Dalaran, with their numbers even in that place measuring in not hundreds but dozens.

Ah, have you forgotten about the "Lost Isle of High Elves"! ;)

I checked out a youtube for "Alleria Emotes & Hero Ability", I'm not feeling the urge to spend the 10 bucks. Medivh is awesome, but I've not felt the urge to spend to replace Jaina with a non-Gnome, at present.

I really liked the card back you get with Alleria...doubt I'll spend $10 on it tho...even though I mainly play with my hunter deck :-)

The only classes/heroes/decks that I have over level 10, or that I do quests with, have been Paladin (only one over level 20), Mage, and Warlock. I probably should work on the others and get them over level 10, now that I've found the iPad experience more engaging, for me, than sitting in front of the computer. At least the ones that don't have me as an Orc as the "hero". ;)

I did get my free pack of cards from winning a weekly Tavern Brawl, my limited experience is in line with Reddit and the Blizzard Watch article, "Breakfast Topic: Are you enjoying Hearthstone’s Tavern Brawl?".

The new Hearthstone feature Tavern Brawl went live yesterday for the first of its weekly runs. The special rule set for this week is Blackrock Mountain-themed. You are pitted against another player and randomly assigned to play either Ragnaros or Nefarian from the recent Adventure Pack. Sounds fun right?

Well, the problem seems to be that the decks aren’t very balanced. An informal Reddit poll shows Nefarian winning 75% of his games and Ragnaros only 25%.

I enjoyed it, but not sad to see this one is only around a few more days. I'm not actually sure if there is a money-making scheme in there, it's nifty and fun but it's so unbalanced that I can't see anyone paying to participate. Perhaps future Tavern Brawls are expected to be more balanced, but the decks and different hero starting conditions & abilities are so wild that even with extensive testing and tuning it would seem hard to do.

As long as they bribe me to participate with a weekly free pack, I'll keep playing and enjoying them each week, whether they are balanced or not. 8)

I have not played many matches this week, and I'm so far down the rankings that it's other casuals like me that I get matched up against while doing the quests (this late in the month the serious players likely have all levelled up to at least get the monthly card back, while I have not), but I have not seen any opponents with one of the alternate hero options since the patch dropped.

I'm wondering how well these are selling? With the standard free heroes eligible for a free animated golden version with 500 wins, the 10 bucks does seem like a stretch for a replacement. The animated golden versions look pretty cool, to me.

If they go on sale, I'll likely pick up the ones that allow me to kick all the Orcs to the curb, even animated golden Orcs, and would pay full price for a Gnome like Wilfred Fizzlebang to replace Gul'dan. 8)

Whenever a player completes 500 wins in Ranked Play mode with a given hero, that hero will be permanently replaced with a golden version. These are similar to golden cards, with golden borders and special animations, and will automatically be used instead of the regular version in Casual and Ranked play, as well as Duels. However, they will not be used for Arena.

Hero powers and those minions and weapons created by hero powers will also be affected, with fully animated golden versions. Specifically Searing Totem, Wrath of Air Totem, Healing Totem, Stoneclaw Totem, Wicked Knife, and Silver Hand Recruit summoned by golden hero powers will be golden.

Sometimes it's nice to read an article in the mainstream press about the hobby, The Guardian has a nifty two-part article on "Hearthstone: how a game developer turned 30m people into card geeks".

Also, when frustrated at the WoW devs, frustrated at the lack of Gnome heroes in HotS and Hearthstone, it's good to see in media that the Blizzard devs are also actual gamers.

And, while I wait impatiently for Wilfred Fizzlebang as a Warlock hero option, it's also good to remind myself that the "macro-transaction" cost of adding an optional hero to my roster does help fund the large community that being free-to-play generates, as the article highlights.

Heh, heh! He is! If I played Warrior, I'd be motivated to pick him up, too. Besides, not only does Garrosh make me not interested in running a Warrior deck, his animated golden version is not that good, either, IMHO.

Magni is a big upgrade! 8)
