Very nice Brixee! How did you do the camera pans? That didnt look like mouse work to me.

Also I should have all the original unedited versions of those screenshots without logos and stuff on my HD somewhere should they be needed.

I was about to suggest that if we want to make a lvl 25 video, it might be a good idea to make a practice video or two, just to see what sorts of problems we run into, so we can address them before we attempt the real deal.

If you're talking about the pans for the photos, that's a feature of Windows Movie-Maker called 'Pan and Zoom'. As for the camera work in the video footage, the flying stuff allowed me to set the camera where I wanted it. My mouse has a button that sets the wheel from 'click' mode to what I call 'silent' mode, and in 'silent' mode, it zooms smoothly.
One of the drawbacks of using WMM is that there is no way to crop footage; that's why the one live piece starts with Brix standing still, and ends with a couple extra seconds of still footage.

For the next iteration of the video, I'd like to darken the purple background for the text spots, and to use your G4 logo. I'm not quite sure how to put it in, but I might be able to come up with something. I rather liked using the edited versions of the pics as it shows exactly what we did. I was trying to find ones that had more gnomes in them, and was hoping to find some of your Ulduar edits in the gallery - the one of us on Kolo's head looked really nice. I'd also like to get more live footage of us doing...things. Nothing in particular. Something I discovered was that putting a bit of footage amidst the pics helps break the monotony. There are also 2 pics that aren't from the guild - one is my Belf Mage flying over Zangarmarsh, and the other is my Draenei hunter and her Fox. But they looked nice, so I included them.

The music itself is 3:56 long, while the video portion is 2:48. This is why the music ends abruptly. I have yet to figure out how to fade the music where I want it to. It's either figure out how to do that, or lengthen the video so it doesn't end goofy.

The YouTube link is classed as 'Unlisted', so the only way to find it is by using the above link. I wasn't interested in being spammed by Trolls, and I did this (the video) for the Guild - not the general public.

The video is also the second version I made. The first one is basically the same thing, but it's the one I learned things on and it doesn't have live footage.

Despite a few minor things that bug me, I'm pleased with it. And I tend to be my own worst critic. I do, however, REALLY like the music. I could watch the video over and over just for that alone.

Well I can provide still images of the logo (or other text) on any color background imaginable (includung "green screen" for adding text over video), and at pretty much any resolution. I have semi-mad Photoshop skills. Though I will say my version of PS is quite old so it doesnt have all the latest bells and whistles on it.

So apart from crazy whirling 3D kinda stuff, I can do pretty much any kind of text art we might need.

Last night, my old GL from Gnome Depot logged on. He and his wife are currently on Moonguard - long story. They both went on a run with us in MC a while ago. I explained what we are trying to do with the video and asked him to watch it and tell me what he thought. He thought it was very good, and captured the essence of the guild. He summed it all up with this:

"But I can tell you that showing all those Guild Achievements really does a nice job of emphasizing the journey, not the destination. Which is what a 'Lion Parade' would seem to do."

So far, response from those who came here to watch it is positive. I know I come here a couple times a day and watch it. I made it, so you'd think I'd be sick of it by now - but I'm not.

I'm pondering a ... well .... storyline, I guess for the video. Or maybe it could be considered a theme. I'm not sure. I'll elaborate on that once I've looked into a couple of things.

In the meantime, things I'm looking to add:

- a couple of fights. This could be from any raid we do. I'd prefer something with some space around us so I can pan around, and zoom the camera.

- more live action footage. This could tie into my storyline idea. These would only be very short clips.

- if anyone has a favorite screenshot of their main that they would like to include, feel free to post it here. It should be sans UI, and a decent size. It doesn't have to be a current pic - it could be an older one.

How do I do video in the game?

Would you believe -

I get all hopped up on about 5 pots (not cups - pots) of coffee, and in my caffeine induced haze, I hammer the "Prt Scrn" button like a Woodpecker, then blend it all together seamlessly?

No?

Ok. There are at least 2 video recording softwares out there. One is Fraps, which most people use. It comes as a free version or a full version. Full costs money, and Free doesn't record in as high a detail as Full. Free also sticks an annoying "Fraps.com" (aka - a Nag Tag) at the top of EVERYTHING you record. The other one is "WeGame" - which also has a Free and Full version. But the difference is the WeGame Free doesn't stick a nag tag on what you record. Like Fraps, the Free doesn't record in as high a quality. For the no-nag tag feature alone, I use WeGame. If I'm going to record something, I have to start WeGame before WoW. Otherwise, it won't recognize I have a game running. It has very simple controls - push this to record (or take a picture), and push it again to stop recording. It saves the files on my computer, which I may upload where I want at my leisure.

The Time I put into it?

Surprisingly - not much. Downloading the music didn't take very long at all, I have a crapload of ss on my computer, there are a fair bunch of ss here on the Guild Forum, and the videos I filmed probably took...ohh... 20 minutes? Then I threw it all in Windows Movie-Maker, tweaked it a bit, uploaded it to YouTube (the longest part of the entire thing), and there it was - done. So I would say, from start to finish, it might have taken an hour and a half.

Was talking to Forbs & Katt in Vent, so per request I'm posting some of the videos I've made in the past.

World of Warcraft:
I made this video.... 3-4 years ago? On a delapidated computer and trying out Fraps. XD It was just done in silliness and is a mix of live-action and completely pointless screenshots. It's not finished. I wanna re-do it seriously someday.

World of Azeroth

That was my only WoW video I've done. However, I've done a lot of anime/animation music videos in the past, so here are some of my best ones.

Digimon:
-__- My friend made me do this video. I'm fairly "meh" on the series. But it turned out to be really nice. My only complaint was the source video was kinda *phhhbt* and was my only anime vid I had subtitles in.

All the Digi Ssid

.hack//Sign
.hack//Sign. Whee, if it weren't for this anime I probably wouldn't be playing WoW. XD Depressing song and depressing animes go together!

Tsukasa's Road

Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron:
This video is my masterpiece. It usually took me a week to make me a video. This one took a month. Because ever little movement, whether it be a head shake, a jump or anything else had to be timed perfectly with the music.

Rhythm Equitation

I've got more vids, but those are what I think are my best ones. Well, the WoW one isn't my best one but still. XD

The next version of the video is completed - sort of.

After spending the morning hunting for video editing software - and failing miserably - I discovered that WMM *will* trim video. The only minor issue with that is sometimes WMM gets fussy about a video it just edited and won't recognize it. I have figured out how to get around it, though.

So, here's version2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQCkK7-Y3VI&feature=youtu.be

IT IS NOT COMPLETE. There are a number of things that need to be corrected and fixed. I slapdashed our Logo through Paint, so it doesn't look great - at all. And there are a number of live scenes missing. The purpose this vid serves is to storyboard out what my plan is, and if changes need to be made, it can be done without rushing through it.

I plan to trim our meeting footage a little bit, and our Archimonde fight could use a bit more of a trim, too.

The idea is that we get a majority of the video done beforehand, leaving us only with filming the Ding and the post ding celebration to be done on the day. As you can tell, I'm really stuck on the whole filming the ding concept. It might be difficult, but with a lot of communication and planning, I really think it could be done.

An idea I had while putting this together: put together enough pics and vid to take us to the ding, where the music ends normally (ie - if the music is 3:15 long, then we need 3:15 worth of filler). Then for the Fireworks show at the end, the audio is us in vent whooping it up. Any thoughts?

As I mentioned its a trivial change to put a purple background on the logo, and I can provide it at high resolution. All I need is an email address to send it to. Also as much as I enjoy taking nice screenies that look good on the website, I still feel that videos are not the best media to display still images unless they are particularly powerful.

I have another idea that (while significantly more work to accomplish) would in my opinion be much more compelling on the screen than still images. I suggest taking a page out of Blizzard's book. Take a moment and watch the MoP announcement trailer again to refresh your memory...

The Mists of Pandaria Trailer

Just heroic music, a voice over, and quick MTV style cuts that hit you Bam! Bam! Bam! with fresh visuals every 3 seconds. The viewer doesnt have time to get bored. The whole thing is over in 2:45. Notice also how they bring up the text *BLING!* over the visuals.

Now granted, we dont have The Chin to do a voice over track for us, but replay that trailer again in your mind's eye. Only this time, replace the Pandaren and other Tall Folk with Gnomes (in G4 Tabards of course) doing similar things.

Imagine a squad of Gnomes galloping into the sunset on their Mechanostriders (or swooping low in formation over a battlefield in their Flying Machines), backed by similar heroic style music (perhaps lifted from the game soundtrack itself).

Now imagine instead of still images taken from the archives, we actually go back to those dungeons and raids and we set up and record boss kills for the video. Imagine quick 2-3 second cuts of combat showing Gnomes in the foreground lobbing Arcane Missiles to the bosses face, with the boss falling down, and the Achievements flashing up on screen (I can supply those Achievement badges that I photoshopped into the posed screenies).

I just think that if we want to go to all the effort of making a video...lets pull out all the stops, and make something that people who arent even in our guild will want to watch. Make it less about us as the the stars of our own ego-reel and more of a Gnome Empowerment thing. I think if we show Gnomes doing exciting things, it will make viewers want to roll Gnome themselves, and maybe even join G4. In that way the video can do double-duty as a recruitment tool.

I'm not a fan of anime. You'll have a hard time pulling out a "That was awesome!" from me, with anime vids. I will, however, say that they were pretty good.

But that horse one... you did not give yourself an easy song to pace the video too. And you did it. That was awesome! 8)

I would have no objections to doing a proper full-blown machinima for the guild, so that's not a problem. However....if that's the type of thing you're looking for, I would need time to further play around with recording live to see what I can achieve. Bear in mind - Blizz has everything they need to create nice looking stuff like that, plus years of training and experience to back it. I have a low budget recorder and WMM. To recreate our Guild Achieve boss kills - wow. I think something like that would be beyond WMM. Not the actual kill, I mean. I'm saying superimposing the achieve tag over the fight. It could be done with Sony Vegas, but I'm not sure how to put the glow on the tag. WMM will let me put text on any pic or vid I want, but that's as far as it will let me go.

I wasn't trying to make it an ego-reel, despite the fact it may have come across that way. My intention was to document (with what materials were at hand) our journey to a lvl25 guild. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah, my slapdash Guild Logo likely made you cringe. =) One of the limitations of WMM is that when I set it into Pan and Zoom mode, it automatically adds inserts the opening and ending credits (which wants text and nothing else). It acknowledges that those components are not to be P & Z'ed, but everything else (except vid) is P & Z'ed. There does not seem to be a way to start P & Z where I want it to. So, I had to fidget the logo around a bit to make it more legible. In the long run, it's simply there as a placeholder for a better version.

I'd be up for trying to help capture video, since I have a bit of a knack for framing and composition.

But my videocard isnt the greatest and I'm pretty sure attempting to record while playing would drop my framerate to unacceptable levels. And buying a new video card isnt really an option at the moment.

So my best way of contributing is likely to be my mad Photoshop skills.

I did some poking around on the net this morning, and discovered to my surprise that I can get Sony Vegas in either version 10 or 11 for around $100 - considerably less than my initial browsing had suggested. This pleases me immensely.

One thing I would like to suggest for this project (not the video itself, but the entire lvl25 idea) is a deadline. Ie - no further ideas will be considered after a certain point. This would give us some time to polish whatever we're working on. If we're sitting at lvl24 3/4 when someone gets a great idea that everyone is enthused about, that's just not going to give us enough time to get the whole thing planned out and implemented.

A further suggestion I have is that, regardless of WHAT we decide on to do, a prime requisite of the event is that it should be attendable by any level of character - pre and post Ding. A Guild lvl25 ding is a big thing, and I feel that everyone would like to participate in such a momentous occasion. This guy took an "Out of left field" approach to how he contributed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQQ3d1K_jss

Here's a video closer to what I'm thinking of:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QpUw0phBfI&feature=related

First off, I really HATE the music. And I'm getting tired of the second song already. The quality of the video suddenly goes to pieces, which is distracting as all get out and ruins the montage sequence. But I like the general tone of the video. This would be a good example of taking a template and doing it better. And while my skills in machinima are amateur at best, I *know* I could take this idea and do it better.

Thoughts?

Well a hundred bucks still looks like a lot of money from where I'm sitting at the moment. So I will mention that download.cnet.com has a number of video editing applications available, some of which are "free". I havent experimented with any of them yet so your mileage may vary and all that.

The guy killing the boars was obviously fake, inspired by the Southpark episode, and didnt do much for me.

But the second one was interesting. If we all approached the Big Ding with our Quest Logs completely full of quests ready to turn in, and we all turned them in during a big final push, and recorded the blue bar getting closer and closer to full, that would add interest. We might even do a guild event, perhaps an "all-nighter" as we run raids/dungeons to get the final ding?

It also gave me another idea, at once easier and more interesting than trying to time The Big Ding to an event in a live video recording. What if we had multiple members recording what they were doing during The Big Ding event? Perhaps clips of lowbies fighting Troggs, and highbies raiding, and RP'ers in a pub, and maybe explorers on a mountaintop, and PvP'ers in Tol Barad, and a Gnomish Deep Sea Diver, and have the Big Ding recorded on ALL of their clips, and we made a montage of all those clips?

That was one of the first places I perused when I went Window-shopping. A majority of the software I found that would do what I wanted was limited to 30 days of use, and anything that wasn't limited to 30 days was too awkward and clumsy to use, or had too many hoops to jump through to download them. What I define as "too many hoops" is having to hunt for information like what the free version comes with, and/or how long it lasts. If I have to dig around to find that simple info, then (imo) something's hinky with it. There were a couple I did download and "test drive", but for some reasons (that I now can't recall) they didn't even last 5 minutes before they got deleted.

A hundred sounds like a lot, I agree, but compared to my initial estimates, it's a better deal. This is not to say that I'm going to dash out and buy it. I'm just saying it sounds a heck of a lot better.

The guy killing the boars wasn't my idea of a good video of a guild ding, but I just thought his approach (fake or otherwise) was unique.

The second one. I agree. It is interesting. Although I never linked it, they had a better quality, but shorter version that simply didn't have the impact of the full version. All it showed was the 5-man group in a dungeon getting the ding.

However....

What you describe would be the simplest, most common sense approach to attaining that goal. And I agree with that logic. Not the approach, just the logic.

"As such I'd like to see us do something extraordinary that no one else has done. Or at the very least do something that others have done, but do it extraordinarily well." - Forbs, Post:"Found this...", Nov. 9

Admittedly, in this quote, you are referring to the very initial video idea of a lip-dub, but the sentiment is the same. Could we run dungeons and raids to get the ding? Yes. And film it? Yes. BUT.......are we doing something that no one else has done? As evidenced by the links I've made to Youtube videos, not really. That's the main reason I'm shying away from that particular approach to our ding. Quality-wise, yes, we could do much better than the second video, but still...we wouldn't be doing anything that hasn't already been done.

I rather like your idea of a montage showing us all out doing things that key into what the aspects of the Guild are: PvE, PvP, RP, etc. I'm somewhat lost as to the Deep Sea Diver, tho.

I think that's all I have to say for now - time to go to work.

Well I guess what keeps tugging at the back of my mind is that the only thing that separates us from all the other guilds out there is the fact that we are all-Gnome. Thats our gimmick. Thats our thang. And Gnomes are FUN!

So I'd like to see that message come through loud and clear in a more compelling fashion than just throwing a block of text in the viewers face saying "ALL GNOME GUILD", if that makes sense? I'm talking closeups of lots of Gnomes, looking like Gnomes (Rocket Helmets, Diving Hats, Goggles etc), doing Gnomish things, no Tall Folk visible at all, except as spectators.

Damn, I think I'm totally visualizing machinema rather than a "Ding Vid" right now. I may not be contributing constructively to this discussion.

I do think we should get a "practice video" into production soon, and see what we are capable of doing. Nothing sharpens your game like trying and failing and trying again.
