I just had an idea for how to work the logo. The unfortunate thing is that I can't do it with WMM.

To start with, the Cata cinematic:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq4Y7ztznKc&feature=relmfu

Scroll it ahead to approx the 2:20 mark, when the WoW logo comes on. As the words come on the screen, they shoot light out. With that in mind, follow me over here to our logo - or better yet, scroll up to the top of the screen. We see "GNOMEREGAN", then 2 off kilter gears, followed by "FOREVER".

So, here's my idea - Make a second logo with the teeth of the 2 gears meshed normally, just like you'd see irl.
A wave of light shining through the letters (similar to the video) starts at the "G" and moves it's way through the preceeding letters, until it gets to the gears. Then it stops. A gnome comes running in from the side with a hammer, and smacks the gears, turning them into our proper logo. The gnome turns and runs off screen, and the light comes back and continues through the "FOREVER".

As I said, I'm pretty sure I can't do this with WMM, but I think it'd be a neat thing to do.

I'm doing a practice video of sorts this weekend as kind of a back-story vid for my priest, just to test out the WeGame video capturing software and getting un-rusty at playing with WMM again.

Forbs mentioned an epic-style trailer like Blizz does for their videos, and if we want to go that route I have an absolutely perfect piece of music for it. :D If all goes well with my test vid, I can start filming G4 events next week. I'll need a combination of scripted RP-like events with people volunteering for scenes, as well as PvE and PvP shots.

Also, apologies for not being as active lately. Was sick towards mid-end of December and now I've got the urge to level everything I have 80+ before the expansion hits. Plus been doing Dragon Soul which is kinda epic... I think? I almost caught a glimpse once of Deathwing behind my wall of health bars and waves of unbearable lag.

Also, I have a potentially HUGE piece of news for G4 that may help to really promote RP. I just need to go over the information with a friend of mine tonight before I can reveal the plan. But I'll give you a hint. If you enjoyed the Warpath events, imagine having regular access to a similar event on a more intimate scale! :3

Brixee I can totally see what you are imagining, and I can do lots of basic stuff with my ancient copy of Photoshop 5.0 (circa 1998) including glows, blings, highlights/drop shadows, and textures like stone, lava or brushed metal etc.

But when we start talking about animated logos the difficulty level and amount of work involved starts escalating rapidly, and quickly reaches heights that are beyond my personal ability to produce. We're talking about generating high-res JPG's for each frame of animation. And when we start talking about an occluded light source projecting geometrically accurate 3D light beams through our logo as it moves behind it...thats outta my league.

I'm not saying an animated logo is out of the question, but the simpler it is, the more feasible it becomes.

It dawned on me yesterday as I was freezing my butt off in the cold that the trial of Vegas I had used was version 10. Vegas is now up to ver. 11. So I dl'ed it last night and have started puttering around with it. I succeeded in accomplishing.....nothing, really. One new thing that Vegas will do is create 3D images, but I have yet to figure out how to do that. That's likely a moot exercise for 2 reasons - one is that not a lot of people actually HAVE a pair of red/blue 3d glasses, and two, my video card can capture 3D anyway.
I'm going to have to spend some time on YouTube finding good tutorials on Vegas to brush up on it. At one time, WoWcrendor had a website with a whole bunch of really good tutorial videos there, but it's gone now and I can't remember any of the authors names.

I think this is something more like what you're wanting to see, Forbs:

But with better music.

This one is an example of what I, myself, don't want to see:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8AUX6qsENc

Too long, and for me, too self aggrandising. Plus, I hate that cartoony font he's using ingame.

This one has good length. I also like how they kept zooming in on the guild xp bar for the Halfus fight...and zooming out....and zooming in...and then they didn't get the ding from him anyway. It built up suspense (such as it is).

Other nice touches that they did were to include rl photos, and include the "Best of Vent" things. Only thing I didn't care for was the music. That seems to be a trend with me, yes?

A most interesting development, and I have no idea how I did it. After I logged off last night, I came here to read any new posts, and decided to watch my original youtube post. Except now, there was a little "3D" button at the bottom. It was never there before. I have no idea how it got there. Can anyone else see it? Does anyone know how I got the darned thing there? I'm not complaining, I would just like to know how it got there.

And it looks pretty neat in 3D, btw. Could be better, but still looks neat.

And now the little '3D' thing is gone. Wth?

Anyways, I have the start of the video (the logo animation) completed to my satisfaction. I finished it a couple days ago, and then left it alone to watch it again to see if it still worked for me. In the meantime, I mused over a storyline that would convey what we're looking for. Sadly, I will abandon my idea of filming the ding from a quest, and just go with a dungeon ding. BUT.......it will not be a normal ding. There will be a build-up to it. Once I have some time to discuss it with Forbs, I will present my idea here.

While some may not like the story line of this video, I've always enjoyed the music and the way it looks and is cut:
